Work on a freelance basis with various publications and organizations as a writer, copy editor, proofreader and creative consultant. Clients have included Austin Monthly magazine, Back Issue magazine, the Hammill Institute on Disabilities, PRO-ED, Inc., the San Antonio Express-News, Forces of Geek.com, the El Paso Black Chamber of Commerce, the El Paso Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the University of Texas at El Paso.

Production Specialist, PRO-ED, Inc. (Production)
Provided typesetting and production-related support to the Production Department, responsible for bringing the company’s special education-focused books, tests and assessment materials to print. Duties included tasks such as proofreading; creating and modifying graphics to be used in print; coordinating with authors, typesetters, printers and freelancers; format conversions; building and maintaining an electronic archive system.

July 2006–October 2007

Production Editor, PRO-ED, Inc. (Journals)
Oversaw the production of four education research journals (three quarterly/one biannual). Duties included managing journal production from manuscript submission through final publication. The process included electronic manuscript submission; pre-processing; and editing and proofreading for content, style and design. Also acted as a liaison between authors, editors and PRO-ED, as well as typesetters and printers.

Feb. 2005–July 2006

Editorial Assistant/Freelance Coordinator, PRO-ED, Inc. (Journals)
Assisted with the production of 13 education research journals published by PRO-ED, Inc., particularly in the primary and final stages of production. Duties included initial log-in and preparation of manuscript materials, resolving permission issues, reviewing author responses to queries and serving as a site administrator for the department’s online production process. Other responsibilities included maintaining and scheduling a stable of freelance editors and proofreaders.

Editor, What’s Up magazine
Oversaw all aspects of producing an independent weekly entertainment paper. Managed a staff of freelance writers; oversaw story selection, headline writing, and photography and graphic design departments. Also edited for content and style, ensuring design and layout consistently reflected the What’s Up brand. Also assisted in editing the El Paso Inc., a sister publication focused on business news and issues.

Special Sections Editor, El Paso Times Marketing
Worked as a copy editor and designer for El Paso Times Market Development. Duties included story selection, editing, design and pagination of six weekly ad-oriented section fronts and the Hot Ticket, a weekly promotional features section. Was also responsible for writing/story selection, editing, design and pagination of monthly advertiser promotion sections, which typically ran from 12 to 16 pages in tabloid format. Also responsible for an additional one to two regularly scheduled special sections each month, as well as various daily editing duties.

Computer Graphics Illustrator, CAS Inc.
Served as a graphic artist with an El Paso-based government contractor, producing briefings for Fort Bliss Army personnel. Finished briefings were in a variety of media; computer presentations often required built-in animation. Acquired a government security clearance level of Secret.

Copy Editor, El Paso Times
Served on the copy desk for the daily city newspaper. Responsibilities included editing daily wire and in-house copy for content and length, writing headlines, page design and layout, and pagination. Frequently was responsible for 1A and Business sections. All duties were completed within a strict deadline. During this time I also regularly wrote for the Features section.
